If you’re a student like myself, life in Tallahassee can get a little hectic between classes, extra curricular’s, and everything else. Sometimes the best way to de-stress and refocus your mind is to get out of the city for a little bit. It’s not always practical or realistic to get away for a weekend, so sometimes only a couple hours will do the trick.
Here’s a list of my favorite places to visit when I want to get out of Tallahassee for a few hours.
Thomasville, Georgia
An obvious location, Thomasville, Georgia is one of the most popular “day trip” destinations from Tallahassee. Under an hour away, this quaint town is perfect for window shopping, grabbing a bite to eat, and exploring this unique city. My favorite restaurant in Thomasville is Jonah’s Fish and Grits, but make sure to get there early to reserve a table.
St. Mark’s Lighthouse
Going to St. Mark’s is the perfect sunset-watching location. If you want to be surrounded by nature, decompress, and gaze out at the horizon for a few hours, this is the perfect place. I recommend bringing some food and drinks, a blanket to sit on, and a speaker or your favorite book. The scenic drive down will instantly make you feel connected to the outdoors and take your mind off of life in Tallahassee. Go solo or bring some friends to sit and watch the sunset.
St. George’s Island
Better suited for the summer months, St. George’s Island is the best beach closest to Tallahassee. While you can still go in colder weather, the beauty of the island and its beaches is better appreciated in sunnier conditions. St. George’s is a further destination, with the drive time being around an hour and 30 minutes, so make sure to plan accordingly. Part of the drive is along the coast, so roll down your windows, blast some music, and enjoy the ride.
Providence Canyon State Park
This one is for the nature girlies. Situated just under three hours north of Tallahassee, Providence Canyon State Park is the perfect day trip from Tallahassee. Sometimes called the “Little Grand Canyon,” the picturesque views and nature trails in the canyon are breathtaking. Even if you aren’t super into the outdoors, it makes for a great photo-op.
